Sacred Heart School Library Class Update
Good News!
Due to an extremely generous, anonymous donation, I will be able to order many
new items for the Sacred Heart School Library. I have sent out Wish List forms
to the Faculty and Staff so that they might let me know of any needs or requests
for library items. I am especially interested in items that would in any way
support their subjects and curriculum. I will do my best to accommodate their
needs. I am aware that one of my most important duties as a Librarian is to
provide information to support the curriculum of our wonderful classroom
teachers. I seek to use this donation to provide them the best possible
information which they can use to educate our Sacred Heart students. The
donation will also provide the students more of the specific books that they
need to check out while doing library research assigned by their teachers.
There have already been many requests from teachers for more books and DVDs on
various subjects in the first few weeks. In History for example I have had
requests for Black History, American Colonial History, the Revolutionary War,
War of 1812, Texas-Mexican War, the Civil War and Native American information.
In Science, I have had requests for Matter, Electricity, the Life Cycle of
Plants, Sound, Gravity, Energy, Motion, Volcanoes, Earthquakes, the Water
Cycle, Weather Climate, and Ecology. I have even had requests from Nurse Cathy
for some DVDs about important topics in Health. In Religion, I have had
requests for DVDs and books on the Sacraments, the Beatitudes and the 10
Commandments. I am also being asked to purchase books and DVDs to support what
is being taught in English as pertains to Literature. I will very definitely be
purchasing books about various Countries that will support projects for
Elementary classes as well as Middle School French and Spanish classes. I will
do my best to obtain as many of the items being requested by our dedicated
Teachers with the very useful and generous donation. I am very thankful to God
and to the kind benefactor that He sent to us. This gift from God’s loving hands
will help us to better serve the needs of the students of Sacred Heart School.
The Sacred Heart School Library is very grateful for any donations of
gently used fiction and updated nonfiction. Together we can make our Library
the best possible place to support the school’s educational curriculum and to
foster the love of reading.
This month in the Elementary School Library classes (Grades K-5) we have read
the book “Have you Filled a Bucket Today?”. This book is a wonderful tool to
use in sharing with students the joy and importance of “Filling the Buckets” of
others by doing and saying kind and loving things. This is being a “Bucket
Filler”. The book also tells of the sadness of “Bucket Dipping”. This is when
we say or do unkind things. The students have written pledges for one loving
“Bucket Filling” thing that they will do this week. If you notice your child
doing even more kind things than usual, they just might be “Bucket Filling”. I
encourage you to get a copy of this book to continue the discussion on the
benefits of being a “Bucket Filler”. The author’s name is Carol McCloud.
In Middle School, we have explored some important Black History subjects by
doing Internet research scavenger hunts on the Underground Railroad portion of
the National Geographic Website. This webpage may be found at
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/railroad/j1.html
We also saw a DVD of the Martin Luther King Jr. Speech “I Have a Dream”, as well
as some important video footage of the March on Washington from 1963.
In various grades this month, students have come to the Library to do computer
research and to check out books for assignments in Black History, African
American Biographies, General Biographies, Mysteries and Adventures for book
reports and research papers.
Thank you and may God bless you and your family,
Monica DiIorio
